How to configure hsqldb for local web development is explained in details below;

Step 1: Download hsqldb

Go to below link and download latest version of HSQLDB. It is just Zip file so no need installation.

Step 2: Config hsqldb server properties

Unzip the folder in to C Drive and create a new file “server.properties” under hsqldb root folder as below;

Content inside the server.properties should be as below; Here database server name is localdb and database is oltp

server.database.0 = file:hsqldb/localdb
server.dbname.0 = oltp

Step 3: Start Server and Verify

Open Command Prompt and go to hsqldb root folder and execute below command;

C:\>cd hsqldb-2.4.0/hsqldb 
java -classpath lib/hsqldb.jar org.hsqldb.server.Server

Verify database created as below; under \hsqldb\hsqldb folder. You can quit the command prompt opened in above step.

Step 4: Start database

To start the database server; open new command prompt and go to hsqldb root folder and execute below command;

java -classpath lib/hsqldb.jar org.hsqldb.server.Server --database.0 file:hsqldb/localdb --dbname.0 oltp

Step 5: hsqldb Client Swing GUI

Go to hsqldb root folder and go to bin and execute file “runManagerSwing.bat”
Update URL as “jdbc:hsqldb:hsql://localhost/oltp” and Setting Name.
Click ok and you should see database connected.


Step 6: Create ROOT User by executing sql command.
